Before top Tennessee prospect Ahva Mayi fights in the UMMAF National Championship Tournament this week in Elizabethton, Tenn., LIVE on FloCombat, the red-hot bantamweight sat down with MMA Mad.
Have your preparations for this tournament differed from how you’ve prepared for past contests, where you’re fighting just once on one night?
Really, it’s been basically the same, but I have stacked a couple harder training sessions together to simulate how it will feel to be in multiple fights on back-to-back days. I’ve got my regular schedule, then harder sessions tacked onto that to mimic the intensity of this tournament.
What challenge does potentially fighting three times in three days present to you?
It’s all about how I react to the pressure. I’m going to have fun in there, for sure, and see how I match up against the different styles from different guys who are from all across the country. It should be challenging, but I’m very excited.
How do you think the fighters in your bracket stack up against you?
To be totally honest, I think I’m better than all of them everywhere. That’s not just me talking shit; I’m the best wrestler in this entire tournament, and my striking is better than it’s ever been.
What will that trophy mean to you?
It’s going to mean a lot, but I’m more excited about the opportunities it’s going to give me as I progress in my career. Of course I want to be a national champion and a world champion, but I’m more focused on the next steps in my career, and that’s where it’s going to catapult me.
