Cody Stamann: “I believe I’m the best prospect in MMA”

Before Cody Stamann tries to improve to 13-1 with his sixth straight win for KnockOut Promotions on March 17 in Grand Rapids, Mich., the top 135-pound prospect caught up with MMA Mad.

Q: Are you the sport’s top prospect?
A: In my mind, I am, yeah. I think that I am one of the most versatile guys I’ve seen. As far as prospects coming up, everyone else in my weight class is very one dimensional, whereas I can wrestler, strike, and do anything. In comparison to other guys in the same spot as me, I think I’m a lot more explosive, athletic, and fun to watch. I believe I’m the best prospect in the sport.

Q: How did you get so good?
A: Just constantly being underrated. I’ve always had kind of a chip on my shoulder. Now that I’ve started to get some of the respect I deserve, not being in the UFC at 12-1 has made me even more hungry. I’m looking to make a statement with my next fights. I think being the underdog, being from a small community has given me this chip on my shoulder. It’s made me more hungry than a lot of other guys.

Q: Why do you think you’ve been overlooked?
A: I couldn’t tell you. I think a lot of it depended on me not having a manager. I was landing a lot of fights in the midwest and I didn’t really have a manager and someone to take care of all of that stuff. I was 6-0 with five finishes and really no one had heard of me. I was doing the right things in the cage but the wrong things out of the cage. So I think that delayed the process a little bit.

Q: How excited are you for this upcoming fight?
A: This next one is going to be a real good one. Another real tough veteran in Bill Kamery. I think it’s a really good fight. He’s not just coming up so it’s going to be a good fight for the fans. It’ll give me a chance to show people what I’m made of and do some flashy stuff and put this guy to sleep.

Q: Do you think an impressive win puts you in the UFC?
A: I say that every fight. I do feel that my opportunity is coming. Fights against guys like Bill Kamery are going to be put me in the UFC. I don’t necessarily know if I need to fight again to get in the UFC but with me staying busy and beating guys up, eventually they aren’t going to be able to turn me down. I don’t know if it’s this fight or the next one, but I’ll be there.
