Khabib Nurmagomedov put on a vintage performance against Michael Johnson at UFC 205, finishing him in the third round after pummeling him for the majority of the contest.
UFC 205 was held tonight (November 12, 2016) at Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York. This event featured UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor Challenge Eddie Alvarez for the UFC lightweight title. two other title fights, and an excellent preliminary card for promotion’s return to the Empire State.
It was actually Johnson who looked sharp early in the bout. He came out with fast strikes at a high volume and had Nurmagomaedov off balance. It even seemed as if he had the undefeated Russian hurt at one point in the opening moments. The story changed, however, once the fight went to the mat.
Nurmagomedov showed Johnson no quarter in the grappling department as he trapped arms and bludgeoned Johnson with hard ground-and-pound. Johnson was never the same after surviving the first round. He was taken down again in the second, and once again survived a beating, but he couldn’t make it through the final five minutes.
After securing yet another takedown, Nurmagomedov switched gears and went for submissions instead of strikes. He eventually set up a tight kimura from side control and cranked. The depleted Johnson had no choice but to tap at the 2:31 mark of Round 3.
Nurmagomedov is now 24-0, with 8 of those victories coming inside the UFC. The 6th ranked Johnson is now 17-11.
