Donald Cerrone – originally booked to fight Kelvin Gastelum this Saturday at UFC 205 – was subsequently pulled from the card after his opponent missed weight. But fear not, it looks as if a new fight is in the works. And it’s a great one.
Matt Brown, who last fought in July of 2016 against Jake Ellenberger, is set to take on Cerrone at UFC 206, which takes place on December 10th in Toronto, Canada. The news was confirmed by Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting but was first reported by Damon Martin of FOX Sports.
The event, headlined by a light heavyweight title fight between Daniel Cormier and Anthony Johnson, is beginning to fill out nicely with some UFC 205 cast offs. Tim Kennedy and Rashad Evans were moved from UFC 205 to UFC 206 following a Rashad injury. Now Cerrone.
A longtime lightweight, Donald Cerrone made the move up to 170 lbs following his title fight loss to Rafael dos Anjos. He’s found much success, scoring stoppage wins over all three of his welterweight opponents. In all likelihood, however, Matt Brown will be his toughest test yet.
Despite losing four out of his last five fights, Brown remains one of the toughest welterweights on the planet. His career was highlighted by a nearly unparalleled seven fight win streak from February of 2012 through May of 2014. The run featured six knockout victories and wins over Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson, Mike Pyle and Erick Silva.
