Confirmed: Eddie Alvarez vs. Conor McGregor set for UFC lightweight title fight at UFC 205

Conor McGregor will face Eddie Alvarez for the UFC lightweight title in New York. Talk MMA on twitter has confirmed that his sources the title fight is set to main event the historic show at MSG.

UFC 205 will be held on November 12, 2016, at Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York.

Dana White had initially stated that Khabib Nurmagomedov was next in line for a lightweight title shot against Alvarez and McGregor should go back to featherweight to defend his title against Jose Aldo. However, it seems like the promotion has switched up its stance and UFC 205 now has a headliner.

This event will be the first UFC event hosted in New York City. It will also be the first UFC event hosted in the State of New York after the longtime professional MMA ban was revoked in early 2016.

Alvarez faced Rafael dos Anjos on July 7, 2016, at UFC Fight Night 90 for the UFC lightweight title. Despite being a three-to-one underdog going into the fight, Alvarez found his range early and rocked dos Anjos with a right hand just past the halfway point of the first round. He then swarmed dos Anjos and landed a barrage of unanswered punches before the fight was stopped via TKO to earn his first UFC title.

McGregor was expected to face dos Anjos for the UFC Lightweight Championship at UFC 196 in an attempt to become the first UFC dual-weight champion. However, dos Anjos withdrew from the fight after breaking his foot. McGregor went on to face Nate Diaz at 170lbs and lost via second-round submission. McGregor would earn his revenge, however, earning a majority decision win over Diaz last time out at UFC 202.

No official announcement has been made by the promotion as of yet but there will be a press conference tomorrow at the MSG theater which may provide further details.
