After weeks of speculation as to who Welterweight Champion Tyron Woodley would defend his belt against, the decision is finally in. And the winner is, Stephen Wonderboy Thompson.
Following his upset win over then-champion Robbie Lawler at UFC 201, many expected Wonderboy to be next in line. Live from the Fox Sports desk, Wonderboy addressed the rumors, suggesting that the two of them throw down in Madison Square Garden. Unexpectedly, Woodley said that he was not interested in the fight, and referenced a couple ‘big money’ fights against Georges St. Pierre or Nick Diaz.
And thus, the mystery began. Which way would the UFC go? Could Woodley be the key to drawing GSP out or retirement? Perhaps Nick Diaz would create a lot of buzz following Nate’s recent success. Even Demian Maia worked his way into the discussion following his dominant win over Carlos Condit.
But alas, Wonderboy earned his shot and suddenly all was right in the world.
Earlier tonight, Woodley announced on Fox Sports 1, that he would be facing Stephen Thompson for the Welterweight Championship. He also announced that the fight would take place at UFC 205 in New York City.
“I got some big news for you guys,” said Woodley. “I’ll be taking on Stephen Wonderboy Thompson in New York City, November 12th, UFC 205, Madison Square Garden.”
The silver lining of the confusion? Now there’s some true, grass-fed, organic beef between Woodley and Wonderboy. As if we needed any more reason to get excited for this matchup.Check out our latest podcast episode featuring Adam Milstead & Dinis "Sweetbread" Paiva
