Drew Dober went to work early and overcame a large reach advantage to finish Jason Gonzalez with a blistering array of hooks in the opening round of their FS1 prelim opener.
UFC 202 took place Saturday night at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. Stipe Miocic versus Alistair Overeem for Miocic’s UFC heavyweight championship served as the evening’s main event.
Dober started quickly after the bell and landed a hook early in the round that seemed to foreshadow what was to come later in the contest. Gonzalez never had a chance to implement what should have been a very advantageous reach advantage as Dober advanced with relative impunity, catching Gonzalez several times.
There was a brief break in the action when Dober let a leg kick go high and land on the cup, but it only took a few moments longer for him to end Gonzalez’s debut early. Dober started a combination in the middle of the Octagon that forced his opponent all the way to the cage. From there, he refused to let up and dropped Gonzalez after several clean shots, sending the man’s mouthpiece bouncing across the canvas. The finish came at 1:45 of Round one via TKO.
Drew Dober is now 17-7 while Gonzalez drops to 10-3.
