[Update] According to Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting, Robbie Lawler “needed a little more time to get ready for the fight after getting knocked out by Tyron Woodley,” and has subsequently decided that UFC 205 – scheduled for November 12, 2016 – was too soon. Still no word on a replacement opponent for Donald Cerrone.
The UFC was just starting to announce the first matchups for their highly anticipated debut in Madison Square Garden when news broke of its first cancellation.
Late last night, TMZ Sports reported that Robbie Lawler has pulled out of his UFC 205 bout against Donald Cerrone for unknown reasons. According to the report, the UFC is currently looking for a replacement opponent for Cerrone, who – for the time being – will remain on the card.
While little is known about the motives behind Lawler’s withdrawal, it’s coming on the heels of his knockout loss to Tyron Woodley on July 30; his first defeat since March of 2014.
Longtime lightweight Donald Cerrone made the move to welterweight earlier this year and has won three in a row, all by submission of TKO. He has quickly established himself as a legitimate contender for the 170 pound belt, and his highly anticipated bout with Lawler was expected to be his biggest test yet.
