Had to check the calendar to make sure it wasn’t April Fools Day for this one. Ian McCall again has a fight cancelled just days before it was set to take place.
After going through a similar situation at UFC 201 with Justin Scoggins, McCall finds himself opponent-less during fight week.
The flyweight bout was expected to take place this Saturday, opening up the Fox Sports 1 prelims in Cleveland, Ohio. It was also anticipated to be one of the best bouts of the night, featuring two exciting contenders looking to make a comeback, of sorts.
For McCall, it was the return from a series of injuries that kept him sidelined for over a year and a half. His last fight took place in January of 2015; a decision loss to John Lineker. He was then scheduled for a rematch with Dustin Ortiz, but was subsequently pulled due to injury.
July 30, 2016 was the original date of his return. A UFC 201 matchup against Justin Scoggins was cancelled just days before the event due to a botched weight cut by Scoggins. His return was then moved to this weekend’s UFC 203. And now Ray Borg’s illness has once again left McCall without an opponent.
It’s an unfortunate case of deju vu for the fan favorite McCall. Unless the higher ups can pull something together last minute – unlikely considering his placement on the card and the lack of time remaining before fight night – McCall will again have to delay his highly anticipated return.
Here’s to hoping they can figure something out for this guy soon. Truly unfortunate situation.
