After Pedro Gonzalez was forced to withdraw due to injury, CES MMA Matchmaker Pat Sullivan immediately went to work to find a formidable foe to challenge Matt Bessette for the vacant CES MMA Featherweight Championship at CES 37 on August 12, from Twin River Casino in Lincoln, R.I.
That’s how Stephen Cervantes received the career-changing call. When offered the opportunity, the dynamic 145er was all in.
“This is definitely the biggest fight of my career and there was absolutely no hesitation to take it. It’s an honor to fight someone like Matt Bessette, and right now there’s nothing I want more than to beat him up and bring the CES MMA belt back to New Mexico. It will be an all-out brawl,” stated Cervantes, an unbeaten amateur who’s won six of his last seven fights since turning pro.
Bessette, a winner of four straight, has other thoughts as he makes his fifth trip into the CES MMA cage.
“I was frustrated when I first found out about Pedro, but I quickly focused my sights on Cervantes. Ultimately it doesn’t matter who’s in there with me. I already made up my mind — I will be the CES MMA World Featherweight Champion on August 12.”Check out our latest podcast episode featuring Robbie Fox of Barstool Sports.
