Michael Chiesa out of headlining bout with Tony Ferguson in Sioux Falls

Michael Chiesa is out of his bout with Tony Ferguson at UFC Fight Night 91 according to a report from MMAJunkie.

UFC Fight Night 91 will be held on July 13, 2016 at Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

A statement from Michael Chiesa can be found below:

To my family, friends and fans,

A back injury has forced me out of my scheduled fight for July 13th against Tony Ferguson. During a routine training session, I felt a pop and shift in my lower back followed by very very sharp pains that left me on the floor. I found out today I have a fully ruptured disk, I will undergo 8 weeks of physical therapy and rehab to hopefully avoid having to go under the knife and get back surgery. Thanks to everyone that supports me, my teammates and coaches, the city of Spokane and all my fans around the world. I’ll be back stronger.

It is a tough run of luck for both fighters involved. This was Michael Chiesa’s first chance to headline a UFC show due to an impressive three fight winning streak with wins over Beneil Dariush, Jim Miller and Mitch Clarke.

Ferguson has had a number of fights scrapped due to injury recently. He was expected to face Khabib Nurmagomedov on December 11, 2015 at The Ultimate Fighter 22 Finale. However, Nurmagomedov pulled out of the fight in late October, citing injury, and was replaced by Edson Barboza.

A rematch with Michael Johnson was briefly scheduled for March 5, 2016 at UFC 196. However, on January 27, it was announced that Johnson withdrew from the bout due to injury. In turn, the bout with Nurmagomedov was rescheduled and expected take place on April 16, 2016 at UFC on Fox 19. Subsequently on April 5, Ferguson pulled out of the bout due to a lung issue.

The UFC is actively looking for a replacement for Chiesa.
