The main event for UFC 201 is official as a welterweight title fight between current champion Robbie Lawler and No. 3 ranked Tyron Woodley has been announced via the Atlanta Journal-Constitution following an initial report from Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting.
UFC 201 will be held on July 30, 2016 at Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. This will be the third that the organisation has hosted in Atlanta, following UFC 88 in September of 2008 and UFC 145 in April of 2012.
Lawler is on riding high on a five fight winning streak. Following his title win against Johny Hendricks at UFC 181 via split decision, Lawler has successfully defended the belt against Rory MacDonald at UFC 189 via TKO in the fifth round and against Carlos Condit at UFC 195 via split decision. Both title defences earned the champion ‘Fight of the Night’ honours.
Woodley is on a two fight winning streak, first besting Dong Hyun Kim on August 23, 2014 at UFC Fight Night 48, replacing Hector Lombard and winning the fight via TKO early in the first round. The win earned Woodley his first ‘Performance of the Night’ bonus award. Most recently Woodley faced welterweight prospect Kelvin Gastelum on January 31, 2015 at UFC 183 and declined 30% of Gastelum’s fight purse for him not making weight. ‘The Chosen One’ won the fight via split decision thus handing Gastelum his first professional defeat.
Woodley was expected to face Johny Hendricks on October 3, 2015 at UFC 192, however Hendricks was forced out of the fight due to complications with weight cutting and the bout was called off.
With this fight addition, UFC 201 now looks like this:
Robbie Lawler vs. Tyron Woodley for the UFC welterweight title
Siyar Bahadurzada vs. Cláudio Silva
Damien Brown vs. Cezar Arzamendia
