MMA Mad’s 5 Fights to Watch: May Edition

The month of May is absolutely stacked with fantastic fights.  So many, in fact, that it’s impossible to mention all of them.  Avoiding the obvious picks like Overeem/Arlovski and Werdum/Miocic, here are five fights that are not to be missed.

UFC FN 87: Rotterdam: Gunnar Nelson vs. Albert Tumenov, May 8th nelsonTumenov

The fight between welterweights Gunnar Nelson and Albert Tumenov is a highly interesting match-up that will have some big ramifications for both men’s careers.  The winner will move on to the next level of competition while the loser will have to once again prove themselves worthy of of their placement in the division. This holds especially true for Nelson, who is coming off a loss to Demian Maia in his last outing and has dropped 2 out of 3.

Another defeat will officially put him on a very rough skid and could delay any ascension into the upper echelon of the welterweight division for quite some time.  No one doubts his talent or potential, but those things won’t help him if he can’t produce winning results and do so quickly. Conversely, Tumenov is currently enjoying a 5-fight winning streak dating back to May of 2014.  A win over Nelson will be his most substantial victory to date and could thrust his name into title contention at 170 lbs.

Considering the depth and number of legitimate sharks swimming in that tank, there could be more work to do for Tumenov if that is to become a reality, but at the very worst, he would certainly be on the cusp of injecting his name onto the list of potential title challengers with a win in Rotterdam.
