Valerie Letourneau vs. Joanne Calderwood added to UFC Ottawa in first ever women’s flyweight bout

A womem’s flyweight bout between Valerie Letourneau and Joanne Calderwood has been added to UFC Fight Night 89. The bout marks the UFC’s first ever women’s 125-pound fight, but is not the launch of a new division. UFC officials are looking into possibly opening a women’s flyweight division in the future, but until the time when or if such a division is permanently announced, there remain two women’s divisions (bantamweight and strawweight) and there will be no rankings set up for a 125-pound women’s class.

UFC Fight Night 89 will be held on June 18, 2016 at TD Place Arena in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The UFC Canada twitter account announced the bout on Thursday afternoon.

Letourneau (8-4 MMA) is coming off a title fight loss to UFC strawweight champion Joanna Jędrzejczyk at UFC 193 in Melbourne, Australia. Prior to the loss, ‘Trouble’ won her first three UFC bouts defeating Elizabeth Philips, Jessica Rakoczy and Maryna Moroz all via decision. Calderwood (10-1 MMA) was a member of season 20 of the Ultimate Fighter. Calderwood defeated Seohee Ham at the finale of the show via unanimous decision. Calderwood would then go onto lose her first pro MMA bout to Maryna Moroz in Poland via first round armbar. Calderwood rebounded nicely in her last bout however, defeating Cortney Casey in her home country of Scotland via unanimous decision and also earning the ‘Fight of the Night’ honours.
