‪João Carvalho, who took part in Total Extreme Fighting 1 in Dublin on Sunday night has sadly passed away in hospital following being addmitted to hospital following a TKO loss to Charlie Ward.

It was reported that Carvalho became “very ill” 20 minutes following the fight after being checked out by doctors a second time and was taken to hospital.

Following his addmission into hospital, TEF chief executive Cesar Silva released the following status.

“Our thoughts are with Joao Carvalho, his family and Team Nobrega. Joao’s welfare is our primary focus at this moment in time but we will update you on Joao’s condition as it becomes clearer although he is in a very serious condition having felt unwell after the fight. If you could respect Joao Carvalho and Team Nobrega’s privacy at this time, it would be greatly appreciated.”

Silva said their chief focus was Carvalho’s recovery, but said that all safety precautions had been taken at the event.

“Joao’s welfare is our primary concern at this moment in time,” Silva told the Irish Daily Star.

“[The] fight was SAFE MMA approved, with three doctors and paramedics present.

“Their presence and adhering to SAFE MMA regulations ensured that the seriousness of Joao’s condition was recognised and swift action taken and we are thankful for their help.

“Serious injuries like this are rare worldwide in MMA but it’s important that every possible precaution is taken to ensure every competitor’s welfare.”

However, on Monday evening at the Beaumont Hospital in Dublin, Carvalho‬ passed away. Here is an announcement from his team on Facebook.
