BAMMA has officially announced the signing of former UFC featherweight Niklas Backstrom following a report from MMA Latest News last night.
Bäckström commented: “I am delighted to get the opportunity to sign with Europe’s leading MMA promotion. The talent within the BAMMA Featherweight division is unbelievable and there are no easy fights in this promotion. However, I believe in my abilities 100% and can’t wait to put on a show for the MMA fans across Europe.”
Backstrom (9-2-1 MMA) went 1-2 under the UFC banner. A debut win over Tom Niinimaki via bulldog choke earned the Swede a ‘Performance of the Night’ post fight bonus. However following the impressive debut, Backstrom lost his next two.
A brutal KO loss to Mike Wilkinson in his home country of Sweden at UFC Fight Night 53 in 2014 was followed up with a majority decision loss against Noad Lahat at UFC Fight Night 69 on June 20, 2015.
Following the loss, Backstrom was released from the UFC and has already earned a win outside of the promotion. A submission win over Georgi Stoyanov at Battle of Botnia 2015 in Umeå, Sweden.
