CES MMA XXXIV Set for April 1st; To Be Headlined by a Welterweight Title Fight Between Chris Curtis and Nah-Shon Burrell

On April 1, CES will be traveling to Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, CT for CES MMA XXXIV.

The event will be headlined by a welterweight title fight between the champion, Chris Curtis (13-4) and the challenger, Nah-Shon Burrell (12-6-1). In the co-main event of the evening, Calvin Kattar will square off against Kenny Foster in a featherweight clash.

The main event will mark the first title defense for Chris Curtis, who won the belt via first round TKO at CES MMA XXXII in January. The victory snapped former champion Gil De Freitas’ five fight win streak and improved Curtis’ win-streak to three.

Challenging for the 170 pound strap is Nah-Shon Burrell, a time-tested veteran of the UFC, Bellator, and Strikeforce. The Philadelphia native began his career with an impressive 8-1 record, before losing five out of his next ten fights. The losses came to a who’s who of the top welterweights in the game, including the likes of Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson, Andrey Koreshkov, and Michael ‘Venom’ Page.

The lone loss in the early part of Burrell’s career came to none other than Chris Curtis, the very same man he is expected to face on April 1st. In the initial match, Curtis defeated Burrell via unanimous decision. The fight, which took place on October 1, 2010, was the third professional bout of each fighter’s career. Now, more than five years later, they’re expected to do it again, and this time, there’s a belt on the line.

A featherweight bout between Calvin Kattar (14-2) and Kenny Foster (11-10) has been slotted for the co-main event on April 1st. Kattar is riding a six fight win streak dating back to March of 2010 but has been sidelined since June, 2013. The 27 year old Massachusetts native, nicknamed The Boston Finisher, has earned stoppages in 9 of his 14 wins.

His opponent will be Kenny Foster, a 30 year old Bellator veteran hailing from Cortland, New York. Foster has an impressive 9-2 start to his career, capping things off with a quarterfinal win in the Bellator Season 4 Featherweight Tournament. A loss to future Bellator Champion Daniel Straus kicked off a four fight skid in April of 2011. Foster has now lost 8 out of his last 10 fights, including a January bout against Mike Santiago for the vacant Ring of Combat Featherweight Championship, and will be looking to return to his winning ways against a tough opponent at CES MMA XXXIV.
