Newark, New Jersey: An illegal knee and eye poke lead to a point deduction in the third. The fight is ruled a majority draw (29-27, 28-28, 28-28).
UFC on Fox 18 was held on January 30, 2016 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Levan Makashvili vs. Damon Jackson took place on the preliminary card which aired on UFC Fight Pass.
Jackson comes out hot in the opening moments of the round. His head movement and boxing combinations are working wonders in the way of disguising those head kicks. He’s yet to land clean with one, but they look sharp.
The next few minutes are spent in the clinch. With two minutes left, the ref breaks things up and Makashvili takes full advantage with some aggressive striking. Jackson slips a punch and closes distance for the clinch, effectively staying out of danger and securing the first round.
MMA Mad scores the first round 10-9 Jackson.
Again, it’s the aggression from Jackson that’s setting the pace in the opening moments of the round. Makashvili is throwing but seems to be just out of range, while Jackson is landing accurately and often. It’s hard to ignore the perceived power of Levan’s striking though.
Jackson has gone for a takedown from the clinch a couple times now, but Makashvili has been flawless in his takedown defense. It’s essentially a stalemate against the cage. Even still, these referees are very separation happy tonight. I don’t like that, but at least we know what to expect now. The second round ends like the first. Jackson likely edged out another round but this one was much closer. A primal scream from Jackson takes us into the third.
MMA Mad scores the second round 10-9 Jackson (20-18 Jackson).
And yet again, Jackson comes out strong. But this time, Levan is the one that initiates the clinch. He’s landing some knees, but the refs separate them again. Levan uses the opportunity to score a takedown, but Jackson uses a guillotine attempt to escape out the side and get things standing again.
Just under the two minute mark and Levan scores another takedown. Jackson is again looking for that switch but he looks tired and is being fully controlled on the ground. An illegal knee from to a grounded opponent from Levan temporarily halts action, but no points are taken away. Immediately after, Levan pokes Jackson in the eye and the UFC treats us with multiple angles of Levan going knuckle deep. Gross.
And now, the referee takes a point away from Levan, citing the combination of the illegal knee and the eye poke. The commentating team consults with Marc Ratner who feels it was an unwarranted point deduction, but nevertheless, it stands.
