Las Vegas, Nevada: Michael McDonald escaped from underneath a smothering Masanori Kanehara and earned a fantastic submission victory in his return to the Octagon.
UFC 195 took place on January 2, 2016 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.Michael McDonald vs. Masanori Kanehara took place on the preliminary card which aired on Fox Sports 1 in the United States and BT Sport in the UK.
Round 1: McDonald landed a nicely timed right hand only seconds into the opening round, but Kanehara wasted no time getting the takedown. McDonald grabbed a guillotine, though, and started cranking. Kanehara survived and pulled his head out before moving to half-guard and then threatening to mount. McDonald kept him in half-guard for a moment, but couldn’t keep him from eventually mounting. McDonald held onto Kanehara and made his way back to full guard before his opponent could do any damage. Kanehara trapped McDonald’s arm behind his back and was able to land a few shots, but the bell rang before anything substantial landed.
Round 2: It took Kanehara very little time to get the fight back to the mat and pass to side control. He briefly moved to full mount, but couldn’t hold it for more than an instant. He wouldn’t give up on it, though, and secured it before locking on an arm-triangle. Somehow, McDonald escapes from the choke and switched to Kanehara’s back. He locked in a tight rear naked choke that was under Kanehara’s chin and forced the tap!
Official Result: Michael McDonald def. Masanori Kanehara via submission (rear naked choke) 2:09 RD 2
Michael McDonald improved to 17-3 with that outstanding submission and sent Kanehara tumbling to 25-13-5 with the setback.
