Donald Cerrone moves to welterweight; Faces Tim Means in Pittsburgh

By Ty Reynolds @MMAtylander

Donald Cerrone’s next fight will take place at 170 lbs. when he takes on Tim Means at UFC Fight Night in Pittsburgh.  The bout will serve as the main event of the evening.

“Cowboy” will be looking to bounce back strong after being dropped in the 1st round of a lightweight championship match by the 155 lbs. king, Rafael dos Anjos, early last December.  The loss was his first since August of 2013.  Unfortunately for Cerrone (28-7), both of his most recent defeats came at the hands of the current lightweight champ, so earning another shot at gold in the division would likely prove impossible as long as dos Anjos holds the belt.  Therefore, while not previously speculated upon, a move to 170 lbs. is not surprising.  Neither is the quick turnaround, as Cerrone has a reputation for fighting as frequently as possible.

His opponent, however, Tim “Dirty Bird” Means (25-7-1) , will be a stiff test for Cerrone’s divisional debut.  Means is on an impressive streak right now, winning 4 out of 5 fights with the most recent victory coming via knockout against the tough John Howard on December 10, 2015.  The finish got Means back in the winner’s circle after he dropped a bout to Matt Brown via submission, a contest he was looking good in until Brown stormed back and earned the finish.   Getting the chance to face Cerrone will be the biggest opportunity of Means’ career in the UFC and the first time he will be scheduled to go 5 rounds with the promotion.

UFC Fight Night in Pittsburgh will take place in the Consol Energy Center on February 21, 2016.  Derek Brunson will take on Roan Careiro in the evenings co-main event.  John Lineker is also scheduled to face the undefeated Cody Garbrandt on the main card.
