Orlando, FL- Karolina Kowalkiewicz put on a quality display of striking technique against Randa Markos on her way to picking up a victory in her UFC debut.
UFC on Fox 17 took place December 19, 2015 at the Amway Center in Orlando, Fl. Randa Markos vs. Karolina Kowalkiewicz was contested on the main card portion of the event.
Markos tried some lateral movement to start things off, but Karolina caught her flush with some straight shots that seemed to make Markos think twice. Karolina was waiting with her hands low for Markos to come ito range so that she could light her up. She ws moving well and engaging and disengaging at will. About half way through the round, Markos decided it was time to clinch and she pushed Kowalkiewicz to the fence. She tried to set up a trip, but Karolina defended well and eventually broke the clinch. Markos timid in the striking now, only unleashing single shots when she felt Karolina was within her range. She finally found some courage in the final 10 seconds, but Kowalkiewicz made her pay with a nice 1-2 right before the bell.
Karolina was told between rounds to get more busy, and that’s what she did. She came out letting her shots go and soon had Markos looking a bit confused. Randa was still only throwing single punches or kicks, while Karolina was landing solid combos. Markos, however, decided to clinch, made it to Kowalkiewicz’s back, and dragged her down. Karolina stood up, but Randa locked in a body triangle and tried to manipulate Karolina’s right arm, eventually forcing Kowalkiewicz to attempt to slam Randa back to the mat. She failed to shake Markos loose and found herself defending against a rear naked choke set up. The action would stay in this position until the bell sounded.
Karolina retained her striking advantage from the earlier rounds while markos kept on throwing only the right hand. She was trying to time Karolina coming in, but just wasn’t finding any success with it. Almost all of the combos were coming from Kowalkiewicz. Randa recklessly tried to close the distance in search of a clinch, but was unable to do so. After enduring a spinning backfist, though, Markos was able to finally press the action to the cage for a moment. She couldn’t hold it there, though, and was back to trying to strike with a superior striker. Markos did shoot for a takedown, but was rolled to her own back by Karolina in the attempt. Karolina landed some shots before moving to mount. Markos looked to be in serious trouble at this point. She briefly gave up her back before regaining half guard and standing, but the damage looked to have been done in the eyes of the judges. The fight ended before Markos could answer Karolina’s offense and it looked as if Kowalkiewicz had done enough to take the decision.
The judges agreed, giving the bout to Kowalkiewicz with scores of 29-28, 29-28, and 30-27.
Karolina Kowalkiewicz won her UFC debut and extended her undefeated record to 8-0. Randa Markos is now 5-3 after the setback.
