Orlando, FL- Alistair Overeem earned possibly the biggest victory of his career when he finished the ultra-tough Junior dos Santos in the 2nd Round of the UFC on Fox 17 co-main event.
UFC on Fox 17 took place December 19, 2015 at the Amway Center in Orlando, Fl. Junior dos Santos vs Alistair Overeem was contested on the main card portion of the event.
After years of waiting, Alistari Overeem and Junior dos Santos are finally in the cage together. Each man was rightfully cautious of the others power as they circled in the opening minute. Neither had thrown a punch for the first 1:30 minutes, but dos Santos started trying to find his range with a pawing jab. He pushed forward for a right hand, but missed. Each threw a kick at the same time, basically nullifying both of them. Dos Santos went high with a right kick, but Overeem blocked it. Still no real damage from either man, but Overeem did land a knee to the body. Finally, Overeem lunged in with a left hand that landed, and then another. “The Reem” started to get a little confidence after those blows, but was still not willing to take many chances. he kept circling to his own left, but dos Santos wasn’t unleashing the right hand. Blood was now coming out of Junior’s nose. The round ended with Overeem enjoying a slight edge.
Junior started the 2nd off by accidentally kicking Overeem in the cup. After a briedf break, they were back at it. Overeem landed a good leg kick but then took one to the body from dos Santos. The crowd was becoming restless due to a perceived lack of action, but both men were still very wary of their opponent’s ability to end the fight with one strike. Junior tried to close the distance, but Overeem was constantly circling away, leaving very little time for Junior to land shots. he did get a knee in, but still nothing significant. Overeem began opening up with leg kicks and body kicks that were scoring well for him and keeping dos Santos at range. he stunned dos Santos with a a left hand that opened the former UFC champion up instantly. Finally, dos Santos got Overeem against the fence and landed a quality combo to the head and body. Seconds later, however, Alistair landed a left hook flush on dos Santos’s jaw. Junior fell to the mat and suffered some more hammerfists from Overeem before the bout was stopped! Alistair Overeem finished Junior dos Santos!
The bout was stopped at 4:43 of Round 2.
Overeem became only the 2nd man to defeat Junior dos Santos in the UFC and earned his 40th victory with the effort. He is now 40-14 overall. Junior dos Santos is now 17-4 after losing for only the third time in the Octagon.
