Las Vegas, NV | Geane Herrera had to deal with coming in on late notice, but he was still able to get out of the cage early against Joby Sanchez.
The Ultimate Fighter 22 Finale was held on December 11, 2015 at The Chelsea at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Joby Sanchez vs. Geane Herrera took place on the preliminary card which aired on Fox Sports 1.
As the contest got underway, Herrera was the fighter to take the center of the cage as Sanchez preferred to use movement and circle. Sanchez implemented a hit-and-move strategy while Herrera searched to cut him off and land hard counter punches. Sanchez went to his jab around the midway pont of the round and setup a very good combo to the body that Herrera was to slow to answer with shots of his own. The jabs kept coming from Sanchez and he seemed to be outlanding Herrera with relative ease. A missed spinning kick allowed Herrera to score a late takedown, but Sanchez looked to have controlled the majority of the opening round.
Both men seemed to have plenty of gas left in the tank as they came out for the 2nd stanza, despite the amount of movement displayed in the 1st. Sanchez kept working the jab, but Herrera was more prepared for the timing of it by now and started having more success landing his own punches. He was able to open up a cut on the left side of Sanchez’s face and looked to capitalize with a nice front kick. Undettered, Sanchez let lose an effective flurry of punches around the 2:00 minute mark that backed his opponent up to the cage. Herrera, who took the fight on 10 days notice, was now seeming to slow down. It wouldn’t matter, though, as Herrera, landed a perfectly timed left hook counter after one of Sanchez’s combos that sent Sanchez crashing to the mat. A few punches later, and that was that. The TKO finish came at 4:28 of the 2nd round.
The finish earned Herrera his ninth victory and a 9-1 record overall and left Sanchez with a 9-2 record.
