Las Vegas, NV | Likely down two rounds to none, Sergio needed the finish and he got it, ending things with an overhand right in the third.
UFC Fight Night 80 will be held on December 10, 2015 at The Chelsea at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Omari Akhmedov vs. Sergio Moraes took place on the preliminary card which aired on UFC Fight Pass.
The smaller cage really makes these welterweights look huge. Still – all illusions aside – this looks to be destined for a knockout finish. Sergio is the one looking for the finish early. Flying knees, overhand rights, uppercuts. He seems to be dancing around the stoppage and it’s only a matter of time at this rate.
But it’s Omari who lands the powerful counter and drops Sergio to the mat. Sergio manages to recover and get back to his feet, but that was absolutely the turning point of the first, and should be enough to win him the round.
The pace really seemed to slow down in the second. Both guys are looking for one-off shots and no one is landing with much. A last second takedown by Omari leads to a late guillotine attempt from Sergio, but somehow, we’re moving to the third. Omari is likely up 20-18.
Sergio’s corner informed him that he was down 2-0 and needed to go for the finish in the third. Let’s see if he listens.
Oh my! After being outclassed on the feet for nearly two and a half rounds, Sergio lands a big overhand right and hits him with a flurry to end things in the third.
Official Result – Sergio Moraes def. Omari Akhmedov via TKO (punches) RD 3, 2:18
