UFC Fight Night 78 || Erick Montano edges Enrique Marin, wins via split decision

Monterrey, Mexico – Erick Montano became the TUF 2 Latin American Welterweight finalist tonight, winning a split decision. The official scores: 29-28 Marin 29-28 Montano 29-28 Montano.

UFC Fight Night 78 was held on November 21, 2015 at the Arena Monterrey in Monterrey, Mexico.

A fairly competitive round between the two TUF roommates, Marin stalked Montano for the majority. Some good knees and jabs kept Montano on the outside and shooting for double leg takedowns, but with little success early on. At the 1:30 mark, a takedown followed by a reversal sees Marin on top, landing some brief ground strikes. As the final seconds wind down, both Marin and Montano are exchanging in the center of the octagon.

Effective combinations from Montano early in the second forced Marin to shoot for a takedown. Half way through the round and Montano managed to stand up, but stamina for both is becoming an issue. Some cage clinching and light striking closes out the round for Marin.

The third round began with much of the same; pressure from Marin and Montano searching for takedowns against the cage. Montano offered some decent knees and out-struck his opponent, seemingly enough to wrest the decision from his opponent Enrique Marin.

With the loss, Enrique Marin falls down to 8-3 with Erick Montano becoming the TUF Latin 2 welterweight finalist and moving up to 7-3.
