Melbourne, Australia: Richard Walsh controlled his opponent Steve Kennedy for three rounds en route to a unanimous decision victory (30-27, 30-27, 29-28).
UFC 193: Rousey vs. Holm was held on November 15, 2015 at Etihad Stadium in Melbourne, Australia. Richard Walsh vs. Steve Kennedy took place on the preliminary card which aired on UFC Fight Pass.
Walsh opened up the fight with some major aggression, throwing leg kicks and heavy hands. Kennedy, backing up for the majority of the first round, continued to take heavy leg kicks and stumbled against the cage several times. At the 1:40 mark, Kennedy lands a nice takedown and the grappling exchange begins. After a rear-naked choke submission attempt, the round ends with Kennedy in mount.
The second frame begins with more striking until Kennedy shoots for a failed takedown. Walsh sprawls, and the fight continues standing. Two minutes into the second round, Kennedy appears exhausted but manages to secure another takedown. Once again the round ends with Kennedy on top, this time in full guard.
Walsh controlled the third round with much of the same; solid striking and avoiding Kennedy’s aggressive grappling for the most part. Unable to secure the takedown, Kennedy cannot offer much offense and spends the majority of the round on his back with Walsh throwing standing leg kicks. Overall a solid showing for the 26 year old Australian.
Walsh now moves to 9-3 as a professional, with Steve Kennedy falling to 22-8.Check out our latest podcast episode featuring Robbie Fox of Barstool Sports.
