Melbourne, Australia: Danny Martinez had to work for it, but he eventually earned a unanimous decision victory over a game Richie Vaculik.
UFC 193: Rousey vs. Holm was held on November 15, 2015 at Etihad Stadium in Melbourne, Australia. Richie Vaculik vs. Danny Martinez took place on the preliminary card which aired on Fox Sports 1 in the United States and BT Sport in the UK.
Both men engaged in an active standing battle to start the bout, with Vaculik landing the better shots as he slipped to the side when Martinez came in . His overhand right was scoring with relative ease. Finally Martinez was able to take it to the mat, but Vaculik stalled for a stand-up and eventually received one. Vaculik was then able to score a takedown of his own before the end of the opening round.
The standing battle continued at the beginning of the second. Martinez scored a flash knockdown, but Vaculik recovered quickly and got back to exchanging. It looked as if Vaculik would be able to take Martinez’s back after another takedown, but he was reversed and ended up in guard for a moment before standing and being taken down once again. The round ended with Vaculik working for guard and Martinez searching for ground and pound.
Neither seemed to be slowing down very much as the final round ensued. After around a minute of striking, Martinez successfully forced Vaculik to the mat and ended up in half guard before landing a nice knee on the way back up to a standing position. Vaculik got overly aggressive only seconds later and found himself on the mat against the cage shortly thereafter. Both men finally began to show signs of fatigue as Martinez held a death grip around Vaculik’s legs in an attempt to keep the fight on the ground. He was successful at keeping top position and stayed tight to his opponent while trying to land short shots o the body. Vaculik was able, however, to make it to his feet and land a decent knee right before the final bell sounded.
Both men put up a valiant effort, but the judges all saw it the same and awarded the victory to Danny Martinez via unanimous decision with scores of 30-27, 30-27, and 30-27.
Martinez improved to 18-7 with the hard fought win and Vaculik falls to 10-4 with the setback, despite his best efforts.
