Melbourne, Australia: After a competitive back-and-forth three rounds, Daniel Kelly secured a unanimous decision victory, 29-28 across the board.
UFC 193: Rousey vs. Holm was held on November 15, 2015 at Etihad Stadium in Melbourne, Australia. Dan Kelly vs. Steve Montgomery took place on the preliminary card which aired on UFC Fight Pass.
Daniel Kelly and Steve Montgomery opened the bout with solid striking, with both men landing good shots early on. At 3:35, the pace of the fight changed drastically when Kelly landed a solid takedown and unloads elbows from side guard. Kelly controlled the entirety of the first round with his heavy Judo grappling, despite stand-up efforts from Montgomery.
With the start of round two, Kelly pressures with the clinch but starts to take crisp shots from his opponent Montgomery. A straight left stuns the Judo Olympian and at this point Kelly starts to look very tired. With just over two minutes left, Kelly secured a takedown and starts threatening submissions. He is unable, and Montgomery stands back up, looking to be the fresher athlete. The second frame appeared to be highlighted by Montgomery’s striking efforts and grappling defense.
Throughout the third, Kelly continued with his clinch pressure despite taking combination shots from Montgomery. The American illustrated great takedown defense throughout the second and third rounds, and Kelly largely was unable to implement his gameplan. With one minute left into the fight however, Kelly landed a takedown and threatened with a rear-naked choke and some heavy shots from top. Regardless, this was a worthy competitive fight where both men showed moments of greatness.
With the decision victory, Daniel Kelly moves to 10-1 and continues to add to his career of combat greatness. Steve Montgomery now stands as 8-4 with two straight defeats under the organization.Check out our latest podcast episode featuring Robbie Fox of Barstool Sports.
