São Paulo, Brazil – Johnny Case controlled the striking while displaying good submission defense against grappling ace Yan Cabral.
UFC Fight Night 77 was held on November 7, 2015 at the Ginásio do Ibirapuera in São Paulo, Brazil. Yan Cabral vs. Johnny Case took place on the preliminary portion of the card which aired on Fox Sports 1 in the United States and BT Sport in the UK.
Even though Cabral is an excellent ground fighter, it was Case who first took the bout to the mat and started working from top position. Cabral, however, didn’t stay there for long before he reversed position and started seeking a kimura. Case defended well by holding onto his own cup, something that Cabral complained about, but he was overruled by Herb Dean.
Case kept the fight standing in the second and dropped Cabral with hard strikes before allowing the Brazilian back to his feet. Johnny Case controlled the remainder of the round and clearly took it on the cards.
Round 3 didn’t go quite as well for Case, as he gave up his back early to Cabral and was forced to fight off a rear naked choke attempt. The American made it back to his feet eventually, though, and returned to peppering Cabral’s now bloodied face. When the bell sounded, both men believed they had emerged as the victor, but Case ended up being declared the winner.
He took the bout with scores of 29-28 from each judge.
Johnny Case extended his winning streak to 12 in a row and is now 21-4 overall. Yan Cabral dropped the first fight of his career and fell to 12-1 with the setback.Check out our latest podcast episode featuring Adam Milstead & Dinis "Sweetbread" Paiva
