Former UFC light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans wants to return to the octagon as soon as possible and already has an opponent in mind as he wants to face #2 ranked Alexander Gustafsson next. Ariel Helwani announced this on UFC Tonight which aired last night on Fox Sports 1.
Evans was linked to a potential bout with Alexander Gustafsson on January 24, 2015 at UFC on Fox 14. However, Evans announced was not ready to accept a fight during that time frame as he was still rehabilitating a lingering knee injury.
“We both lost our fights,” Evans told Helwani. “We both are struggling to stay at the top of the weight class and both are desperate for a win. We might as well fight each other.”
Evans (19-4-1 MMA) returned from nearly a two year layoff to face Ryan Bader in the co-main event of UFC 192 earlier this year. Bader won the fight via unanimous decision in a dominant performance. Prior to the loss Evans was on a two fight winning streak, besting Dan Henderson (split decision) and Chael Sonnen (TKO punches)
Gustafsson (16-4 MMA) is coming off a razor thin title fight loss to current champion Daniel Cormier at UFC 192 in a ‘Fight of the Night’ performance.
