Stacked UFC 195 Adds Two Exciting Welterweight Bouts

Written by @NickRiznerMMA

UFC 195, set to take place on January 2nd at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, has added two exciting fights to an already loaded New Year’s card. Stephen Thompson is set to take on Neil Magny in a top fifteen welterweight battle. Also, Lorenz Larkin and Albert Tumenov will have their shot at joining the UFC rankings in a welterweight bout of their own.

“Wonderboy” Thompson, who appeared on the MMA Mad Podcast last week, is currently riding a five fight win streak, with a 6-1 record since joining the UFC. His one loss to Matt Brown was likely the result of a ‘too much, too soon’ scenario for the talented striker. Four of his six victories have come by way of knockout; often of the ‘highlight reel’ variety.

His UFC 195 opponent is Neil Magny, who excluding a submission loss to Damian Maia in August, is undefeated since 2014. This may not seem all that impressive, until you consider that he tied the UFC record for most wins in a calendar year in 2014, at five. He went on to win two more before his loss to Maia, yet bounced back with a split decision win over Erick Silva just three weeks later.

Lorenz Larkin vs. Albert Tumenov could be a potential show-stealer. Both guys have a lot of experience mixed with fantastic striking, leading one to believe that we could have a war on our hands. Tumenov is 4-0 since dropping a split decision in his UFC debut, most recently defeating Alan Jouban with a beautiful head kick knockout in the very first round.

Larkin has spent his career, shrinking through weight classes with middling results. At light heavyweight, he went 12-0 before being knockout out by King Mo Lawal; the result later overturned to a No Contest following a Lawal failed drug test. In his middleweight debut, he defeated Robbie Lawler, but then proceeded to drop four out of his next five fights. In January of 2015, he made his welterweight debut, knocking out John Howard in 2:17 and earning a ‘Performance of the Night’ bonus in the process. He followed this up with a ‘Fight of the Night’ knockout victory over Santiago Ponzinibbio at Fight Night: Machida vs. Romero in June.
