Hidalgo, Texas – Kendall Grove finished Joey Beltran in the third round of their Bellator 143 contest.
Bellator 143 took place on September 25, 2015 at the State Farm Arena in Hidalgo, Texas. Grove (22-15) spent the majority of the fight avoiding notable exchanges with Beltran (16-12) and attempting to fight tall on the outside. It wasn’t the most entertaining strategy, but it did appear to keep the ultra-aggressive Beltran from taking control of the bout with his brawling style. Grove likely took the first round, but Beltran seemed to gain the advantage in the second by employing a high volume of leg kicks and continuing to press forward.
Finally, in the last round, Beltran was able to catch Grove on the cage more often and force the Hawaiian to engage with him. Unfortunately for the “Mexicutioner,” though, he also left himself open to be attacked and ate a well-placed right hand from Grove that turned him around and placed him on all four staring at the mat. Grove would hover over his hurt opponent and finish him off with more punches. The end came at 2:27 of the final round. Beltran seemed to disagree with the stoppage, but the referee’s decision was clearly the correct call.
Defeating Beltran marks Grove’s third victory under the Bellator banner and is his first since dropping a title opportunity against Brandon Halsey last May. Beltran falls to 2-3 inside Bellator after this setback, and may end up searching for a new promotional home before his next assignment inside the cage.
