Hidalgo, Texas – Darrion Caldwell cruised to an early submission win on Bellator 143 Prelims.
Bellator 143 took place on September 25, 2015 at the State Farm Arena in Hidalgo, Texas. Darrion Caldwell vs. Shawn Bunch took place on the preliminary portion of the event which aired on spike.com and Caldwell took full advantage of his spot on the card.
It took only a few moments for the former NCAA collegiate wrestling star to take his opponent, Shawn Bunch (4-2), to the mat and work his elite grappling skills from there. Caldwell (8-0) worked from a couple of different dominant positions before forcing Bunch to give up his back and expose himself to a tight rear naked choke. Bunch fought to escape the hold and was even able to remove Caldwell’s hooks at one point. “The Wolf,” however, was tenacious with the attempt and refused to release the choke despite losing hooks. Eventually, Caldwell replaced his legs and cranked, coaxing a tap from the overwhelmed Bunch. The finish came at 2:35 of the first round.
Frankly, this bout came off as a mismatch. Caldwell had defeated Rafael Silva in his previous bout and looks to be near the top of Bellator’s bantamweight division. With that said, Caldwell competing against Bunch in a bout not featured on the main card seemed strange, at best. This performance will likely put an end to such odd decisions, however, as it is clear that Caldwell is ready to be challenged by some of Bellator’s better bantamweights.
