Anthony Pettis Considers Move to Featherweight; Eyes Fight With McGregor

Written by @NickRiznerMMA

Conor McGregor has spent the last two and a half years antagonizing and provoking nearly every fighter on the featherweight roster. Recently, he’s been extending his reach to the lightweights, as well. According to a report on UFC Tonight, the Notorious Irishman has now caught the attention of the most dangerous striker in the division.

Anthony “Showtime” Pettis is one of the best pound for pound fighters in the world. After falling short in his UFC debut, he went on a five fight tear that included a win over long-time champion Benson Henderson for the UFC Lightweight Championship, and a dominate title defense against the skilled and talented Gilbert Melendez. The run included four post-fight bonuses and plenty of additions to his highlight reel, at that.

His last Octagon appearance took place at UFC 185 in March, as Pettis squared off against Rafael dos Anjos for his second defense of the lightweight title. After twenty five minutes of action, it was dos Anjos getting his hand raised, leaving Pettis to stew in just the third loss of his 21 fight career. Now, after having some time to reflect on his past and look to the future, Pettis seems to be eyeing a major change.

Could we finally see “Showtime” at 145 lbs? The longtime lightweight has flirted with the idea before. Talks of Aldo vs. Pettis were rumored as a potential super fight, based mainly on its stylistic intrigue. In that same vein, McGregor vs. Pettis would make for one heck of a stand-up war. Both fighters are currently booked, as McGregor is scheduled for a title unification bout with Aldo, and Pettis has been pegged for a big lightweight matchup with Eddie Alvarez.

But still, fun to think about…
