It took the full 10 minutes, but King Mo Lawal was never in real jeopardy tonight against Linton Vassell during their Bellator Light Heavyweight Tournament opening bout. Lawal rocked Vassell with a heavy shot early in the first round and never let up. The former Strikeforce champion had his opponent on the verge of defeat several times throughout the opening round and likely would’ve taken the stanza 10-8.
Mo seemed to come out for the second stanza a tad less aggressive, but he still managed to land hard counters against Vassell. After eating numerous blows, Vassell was actually able to secure a double leg and spike King Mo on his head before moving to mount. It didn’t take long, however, for the former wrestling ace to escape from the bottom and deliver a slam of his own. Lawal would keep the fight on the ground until the final bell.
With the victory, King Mo Lawal will move on to the tournament finals, which will take place later in the evening.Check out our latest podcast episode featuring Adam Milstead & Dinis "Sweetbread" Paiva
