When the scheduled main event for UFC 193 fell through, MMA fans around the world voiced their disappointment but feat not, as UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler and former interim titleholder Carlos Condit has been re-booked for the main event of UFC 195.
The announcement was made on “FOX Sports Live”. UFC 195 will be held on January 2, 2016 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey, who was previously expected to fight at UFC 195, was moved up as the new UFC 193 headliner against Holly Holm.
Lawler (30-8 MMA) has been in an incredible run since losing a narrow title fight to Johny Hendricks at UFC 171. A TKO win over Jake Ellenberger was followed by a unanimous decision win over Matt Brown. This win led Lawler to a rematch with Hendricks which Lawler would win to become the new UFC welterweight champion. His first title defence would be a rematch of a 2013 bout against Rory MacDonald which Lawler won via split decision. The rematch took place on July 11, 2015 at UFC 189. Lawler would again be victorious earning a fifth round TKO. The back and forth action earned both participants Fight of the Night honours. The fight was considered an instant classic by fans and media alike with UFC President Dana White hailing it as one of the best welterweight fights in the promotion’s history.
Meanwhile, Condit is a former UFC interim welterweight titleholder who came up short in a 2012 bid to unify the titles with then-champ Georges St-Pierre. Most recently, Condit earned an impressive TKO win over fellow veteran Thiago Alves at May’s UFC Fight Night 67 event.Check out our latest podcast episode featuring Adam Milstead & Dinis "Sweetbread" Paiva
