TEMECULA, Calif. (August 28, 2015) – Patricky “Pitbull” Freire was able to claim a unanimous decision victory over Saad Awad, thus coming out triumphant in a battle of bad blood that had spilled over into Twitter exchanges and a near prefight throw down in the days before the event.
Bellator 141 takes place at the Pechanga Resort and Casino in Temecula, Calif. Freire and Awad collided in the evenings co-main event and provided a tactical, measured bout that was contested at a high level. “Pitbull” pulled off a clean sweep on the judges’ scorecards, but the match was much closer than the final tallies indicate.
Both men fought from outside in the opening minutes and it appeared that Awad may have taken the first round with leg kicks and distance control. Freire was able to break through his opponent’s defenses in the second round, however, and began to take control. He scored with heavy punches early in the stanza and landed a take down before moving onto the final five minutes and sealing the victory with superior striking.
Freire improves to 14-6 overall (7-4 BMMA) with four wins in his last five attempts after knocking off the now 18-7 Saad Awad. The outcome should setup “Pitbull” for another sturdy test in Bellator’s lightweight division and put him on step closer to earning a title shot with the promotion.
