UFC Fight Night 66 will be held on May 16, 2015 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Philippines.
The event will be the first that the UFC has hosted in the Philippines. It will take place in the metropolitan region of Manila.
The event will be headlined by a hugely important featherweight matchup as #2 ranked featherweight Frankie Edgar takes on #2 ranked bantamweight Urijah Faber. The winner of this bout will widely be regarded as the #1 contender to face the winner of Jose Aldo and Conor McGregor at UFC 189 in Las Vegas.
Edgar (18-4-1 MMA) has looked impressive since his featherweight title loss to Jose Aldo at UFC 156. A unanimous decision victory over Charles Oliveira which earned both fighters ‘Fight of the Night’ honours was followed up by a TKO win over BJ Penn which would ultimately send ‘The Prodigy’ into retirement. ‘The Answers’ latest bout however garnered him rave reviews from the MMA community as he destroyed Cub Swanson in November over five rounds, submitting Swanson with four seconds left in the fifth round. It earnerd Edgar a ‘Performance of the Night’ bonus for his efforts.
Faber (32-7 MMA) has never lost an MMA bout that was not for a major title. Since losing a bantamweight title matchup to Renan Barao at UFC 169 which was regarded as a premature stoppage by Herb Dean, Faber has continued to look impressive at bantamweight. A submission win over Alex Caceres (rear-naked choke) at UFC 175 was followed up by another submission win (bulldog choke) over Francisco Rivera at UFC 181 in Las Vegas.
The co-main event features a middleweight matchup between former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi and Costa Philippou.
The card also features ‘The Filipino Wrecking Machine’ Mark Munoz who has announced he will retire after this bout in Manila. Munoz will take on England’s Luke Barnatt on the main card.
