UFC 184: Predictions

UFC 184: Rousey vs. Zingano will be held on February 28, 2015 at Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.

A UFC Middleweight Championship bout between Chris Weidman and Vitor Belfort was expected to serve as the event headliner. The much delayed pairing was previously scheduled to take place at UFC 173 and also at UFC 181. However, on January 30, the UFC announced that Weidman had pulled out of the bout, citing an injury he sustained in training. Subsequently, a UFC Women’s Bantamweight Championship bout between current champion Ronda Rousey and top contender Cat Zingano was promoted to the main event.

Rousey (10-0 MMA) has looked dominant since making her UFC debut against Liz Carmouche at UFC 157 in February 2013. Finishing both Carmouche and Meisha Tate via her patented arm bar in her first two UFC outings, ‘Rowdy’ has displayed an improved striking arsenal in her past two octagon appearances. Stopping Sara McMann via TKO (knee to the body) and then brutalising Alexis Davis in 16 seconds at UFC 175 in July.

Zingano (9-0 MMA) has also looked very impressive in her two UFC bouts. Her first bout was against the former Strikeforce Women’s Bantamweight Champion Meisha Tate. In a ‘Fight of the Night’ performance, Zingano would finish Tate midway through the third round with brutal knees. ‘Alpha’ was then set to become a coach on The Ultimate Fighter 18 against Ronda Rousey and be the next challenger for the UFC Women’s Bantamweight Championship. However on May 28, it was announced that Zingano was out as coach/opponent for Rousey after she had suffered a knee injury earlier in the month which required surgery and had been replaced by Tate.

After nearly a year and a half away from the sport due to injury, Zingano returned to the Octagon in the fall of 2014. She faced Amanda Nunes on September 27, 2014 at UFC 178. After losing the first round, Zingano came back in the two subsequent rounds to win via TKO in the third round.

The co-main event features the long awaited UFC debut of former female boxing champion Holly Holm and TUF alum Raquel Pennington.
