UFC Fight Night 61: Predictions

UFC Fight Night: Bigfoot vs. Mir (also known as UFC Fight Night 61) will be held on February 22, 2015 at the Ginásio Gigantinho in Porto Alegre, Brazil.

The event will be the first that UFC has hosted in the state of Rio Grande do Sul.

A light heavyweight bout between Rashad Evans and Glover Teixeira was expected to serve as the event headliner. However, on January 7, Teixeira was forced out of the bout as his knee, injured in his last fight, was slow to heal and he was unable to resume the proper training to prepare for the fight in that time frame. Evans is expected to be rebooked at a different event with possibly a new opponent.

A heavyweight bout between Antônio Silva and Frank Mir, previously scheduled for UFC 184, will now take place a week earlier, and will now headline the event.

Antonio Silva (18-6-1 MMA ) is currently without a win since his Knockout of the Night performance back at UFC 156 where he brutally finished Alistair Overeem in the third frame. Since that bout ‘Bigfoot’ has lost a UFC Heavyweight title fight to champion Cain Velasquez, fought to a majority draw with Mark Hunt which earned both fighters ‘Fight of the Night’ honours (this award was removed from ‘Bigfoot’ as he failed a drug test for tested positive for elevated levels of testosterone) and most recently he was knocked out in one round by Andrei Arlovski.

Mir (16-9 MMA) is also on a terrible run in the UFC going 0-4 in his last four visits to the octagon. Two decision losses (Daniel Cormier and Alistair Overeem) and two knockout loses (Junior dos Santos and Josh Barnett currently leave Mir in dyer need of a win this Sunday evening.

The co-main event features a possible explosive lightweight matchup between #6 ranked Edson Barboza (15-2 MMA) and the returning #12 ranked Michael Johnson (15-8 MMA).
